HR Operations Analyst | | (858) 246-2677

What is your job and what do you do?

I am the HR Operations Analyst for the Business and Financial Services (BFS) Department. I handle all HR inquiries including student and staff recruitment, new hire orientations, Leave of Absence requests, ergonomic requests, consultations, etc.

Why did this type of work interest you, and how did you get started?

I graduated from UCSD in 2017 and became a temporary employee in fall 2017. I figured I would take a break before grad school but then I fell into the world of HR and the BFS department and ended up applying and landing the permanent position as an HR Operations Analyst. This work interested me because it was different every day. There was also a focus on the student population and how to better serve and help them. As a previous student employee, I gravitated towards this effort and found a purpose in helping grow and prepare the student employee population in BFS for the workforce.

How do student workers impact your department? What roles do they play?

BFS has many teams where students make a big impact in roles that are essential to our operations. We have students working in BFS Human Resources, Payroll, General Accounting, and many other areas. In some parts of BFS students make up 40% of all team members. Often our students are in roles that interact directly with the students, faculty, and staff we serve. Students in our teams prepare financial or personnel records, perform data analyses, plan events, deliver packages, or assist students with questions about their accounts.

What can students gain or learn from working in your department?

Students can learn skills that apply to future careers and academic pursuits ranging from business, financial, and client service skills to project management, marketing, and creative skills. Students gain experience in a professional setting where they practice teamwork and learn prioritization skills. What’s unique about BFS is that we have opportunities to learn multiple business areas since we support so many different business, logistic, and financial needs of our university.

Does your department offer any special opportunities for students?

Students will have the opportunity to learn how different business functions operate and connect to serve a large, complex organization. Another is coaching and mentorship. In BFS, several units formed Integrated Procure-to-Pay Solutions (IPPS) which includes Campus and Student Mail, Accounts Payable, Procurement, Travel, Moving Services, and Receiving & Distribution. An IPPS student is assigned exclusively to the Student Talent initiative this year. The idea is for students to learn one area of the business well, expand to another, potentially become a lead, and be professionally prepared for post-graduation ambitions. Students strengthen their planning skills and learn about different career paths. By encouraging progressive responsibility and variety we can help students graduate with the best of both worlds – meaningful work experience to compliment the outstanding academic experience of being at UC San Diego, a winning combination for success in future pursuits.

When does your department typically hire students? Are there summer opportunities? Do you have any jobs you are currently hiring for?

We hire at the start of fall quarter, a little during the school year, then again starting in summer. Be on the lookout for BFS postings on Handshake.

When hiring, what kind of experience or skills and qualifications are you looking for?

In BFS, we tend to look for students with time management and organizational skills, computer savvy is a plus, knowledge of Microsoft Office is preferred. Above all, we look for students who are eager to learn and are committed to serving the university and the community at large

What advice do you have for students?

Think of an on-campus job as an extension of your education. Ask questions. Think of new creative ideas and don’t be afraid to speak up. If you need help, reach out. Everyone is here to help you grow and prepare you for life after graduation.
